Our approach to your development combines formal programmes with practical skills training and support. In addition to a mentor, you will be assigned a training professional specifically responsible for your progress. Together they will help to track and tailor your development to your individual needs.

The first step on the IDS is to complete an initial induction course for new recruits at the Prison Service College, in Rugby. This is followed by a period of up to two months spent training for your first role as a Prison Officer. This initial training will provide the foundation skills and abilities required of all Prison Officers and enable you to step out into your first role with confidence.

You will spend around the next 9 months working as a Prison Officer, carrying out the full range of associated duties within a prison setting. The on-the-job training you receive here will be supplemented by regular courses and additional training sessions at the Prison Service College.

This stage of your development will conclude with written exams and a Job Simulation Assessment Centre (JSAC).
